SCCA: Solo Nationals first-half roundup
The 39th-annual SCCA Solo Nationals on Wednesday crowned 35 national champions after half of the SCCA Solo classes completed competition at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Neb. According to a press release posted by the SCCA, the following results have been reported:

Ten drivers competing on the two courses set up at the Airpark took the lead on the second day of runs in the autocross competition to become their class's national champion.

In heat one on the East course, the C Street Prepared top-heavy class awarded the first trophy of the year after a dramatic day of heats. Chris Robbins led overnight, but the seventh driver to take the course, Tim Aro of Glen Allen, Va., set the time to beat. Aro had to wait for the rest of the field to complete runs before earning his second CSP national championship.

Austin, Texas, native Andy Hollis made up nearly a second on overnight leader Tim Smith when the group moved to the East course--which Hollis designed. Hollis used his knowledge of the course to run the day's fastest time and earn his third Solo national championship.

In F Modified, brothers Jeff and Stefan Colegrove swapped the lead overnight. Older brother Jeff took the lead on Wednesday with a 57.272-second lap. Stefan Colegrove came up just 0.148 second short on his final run to finish second.

Todd Farris, a three-time runner-up, earned his first national championship in the C Prepared class. He beat second-place finisher Jeff Stroh by 0.094 second on his final run.

Andy McKee of San Jose, Calif., took home his sixth national championship in the Super Street Modified class by extending his lead to 2.403 seconds on Wednesday.

Defending B Street Prepared ladies champion Christine Berry was a tenth of second behind coming into Wednesday's runs. But the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native completed clean runs to finish 0.529 second ahead and clinch her fourth national crown.

Christopher Shay, Matthew Braun and Sam Strano were separated by 0.064 second after Tuesday's Super Stock runs. But Braun, of Northville, Mich., used cooler tires on his Lotus Elise for each run to pull out a 1.406-second lead over second-place Strano for his second-consecutive Solo title.

E Stock national champion Bartek Borowski beat nine other champions from Wednesday's competition to win the inaugural Gumout All-Star Challenge and a $500 prize. All 10 drivers took two runs in the Gumout Project Car Volkswagen Golf. Aro and A Street Prepared-winner Courtney Cormier finished second and third, respectively.

The rest of the classes began competing on Thursday and will wrap up on Friday afternoon.

Car News Test DrivesBefore you and me see new models of cars or modifications of old one, they pass through the stricked control in laboratories, garages, on streets and platforms. Everything thing is called test drives. There cars are tested on a great number of points – power, safety, control, easiness of driving, protect from damages and other features. Tests can be made not only for the whole car, but for its separate parts also – wheels, air bags, hardness of base, suitiness of wheels to the type of road, protect from temperature and many others. For each, even smallest detail, scientists have couple of test.
In special laboratories techniques create situations and observe how car will show itself. How will these situations will influence passengers and driver.
It helps producers to identify all problems and disadvantages due to correct them before mass production. In case of low quality test drives, innocent people can be harmed.
While cars are tested instead of passengers, soft manikins are used. Numerous appliances are based on them, and at the moment of artificial crash it will memorize the force of hit, speed, possible damage on other characteristics, needed to be clarified.
When parts are tested they may be separated from the car structure or be on their place. These test also show what material is better to be used on this or those detail, how long will it serve and how it should be treated.
Kia Rio B-Spec First Drive
As I came up fast over the crest just before the sharp right-hander, I felt the race car begin to understeer away from me. "No worries," I thought, forgetting what exactly I was driving, "I'll just get on the power and get it straightened out." A tank-slapper later I was facing the other direction on the edge of the grass. I had just spun out on my first lap ever in a race car. A front-drive Kia Rio B-Spec race car, at that.
