Preview / Unicab, The New York Taxi RevisitedEvery year, it seems, a group of specialists turns its attention to one of the most well-known vehicles in the world, and certainly one of the most-used: the Yellow Cab, the famous New York taxi. And each time, they attempt to redefine the mission, and the design, of this utility vehicle.
Photo: The Taxi Of Tomorrow This time around they examined the Unicab, a prototype designed not only for practicality and versatility, but also for reducing the environmental footprint of the 17,000 strong New York fleet. The Unicab proposes to answer all needs in a single vehicle. It’s accessible for people of all sizes as well as those in wheel chairs, equipped as it is with electric panels that can be lowered. The rear seats can accommodate three passengers, and a fourth seat is available for larger groups. The design of the vehicle itself is unique and intended to set it apart from the crowd: acrylic glass roof, sliding side panels, elevated rear and abundant windows ensure good visibility and let more light stream in. This taxi of tomorrow doesn’t have an engine yet, but officials are interested in equipping it with an electric or hybrid electric engine, depending on the technical variations possible. However, the Unicab, created by Chris Burrell and Damian Lucaciu, is still just a concept. Photo: The Taxi Of Tomorrow |

A tank-slapper later I was facing the other direction on the edge of the grass. I had just spun out on my first lap ever in a race car. A front-drive Kia Rio B-Spec race car, at that.
